Dear Tiny,

You are already a wunderkind. The midwives have been talking about us when we're not there because they can't believe we haven't gone into labor with you yet. I am unclear as to whether you are demonstrating your force of will or exerting your stubbornness. When she was a little kid, your Aunt Kate used to hold her breath until she passed out if she didn't get what she wanted. Let's hope that you are a little less intense, hm?

Love,
Mama

Dear Tiny,

Last night I had a contraction around 4am. I got up and drank some water, ate a banana and told Dad. He was totally unfazed and was back to sleep within two seconds... because you have become known as our little faker.

Tomorrow I'm going to play fun pop music all day and have a dance party on the yoga ball. Maybe the endorphins will convince you the world is a fun place to be? Or if not the endorphins, clearly some Madonna should do the trick.

Love,
Mama

P.S. If you actually come on your due date, you will BLOW OUR MINDS. 10/11/12 would be an awesome birthday. Do it!

Dear Tiny,

I just rode the elevator with a 7-week old baby who was crying his head off. His mom looked a little frazzled but not too bad, which I took to be a good sign.

"Maybe my baby will hear your baby and want to come out," I joked and she laughed.

Maybe?

Love,
Mama

Dear Tiny,

Today is my first day of maternity leave. It is SUPER-weird to not have a job to go to and last night I had a few moments in which I panicked and wanted to plan some things for today... but it's Columbus Day and so much is closed! Dad laughed and said he has no idea what I'm going to do for three months... but we agreed that I will probably be a little busier once you get here.

I'm not sure how I'll feel when you arrive; likely I'll want us to stay home for a while to get situated, but then I imagine I will be very game for taking you out in the world. We have a few different baby carriers and I'm excited to strap you into one so that we can go to the library or on a walk or whatever!

I originally guessed October 8th would be your birthday... I guess we'll see, hmm?

Love,
Mama

Dear Tiny,

It got really chilly last night and today it was cold and rainy. It made me think about your birthday and the weather we should predict for your future birthday parties... depending on what climate we live in, we may want to plan your birthday parties a few weeks in advance so we can do fun things outside.

But then, considering global warming, it will likely stay summer til December by the point we're planning outdoor birthday parties for you and your friends. Sigh.

Love,
Mama

Dear Tiny,

Tonight Dad and I ordered take-out from the grill down the street and a moment after we hit the "order" button, I realized I didn't actually want what I ordered. It was too late to change it and I ended up in a angry with myself, which led to a mixture of crying and laughing because I felt so ridiculous. Hormones! We laughed about it for a long time and then when Dad went to get our food he brought me flowers to cheer me up.

He's my best friend and I'm very happy that you will be a mixture of the two of us!

Love,
Mama

Dear Tiny,

Well we made it to the New Yorker Festival! When I bought tickets last month I was really doubtful that I would be able to use them, but I was so happy to sit through a couple events last night and listen to world-famous authors discuss their fiction. Maybe you were itching to hear some author-speak too and wanted to hang around in utero to make it work?

Every year these events inspire me to write and last night was no exception. Dad and I were talking the other night about all of the different things that might inspire you in the world -- will you be really into chess? Painting? Writing? Fishing? Running? Whatever it is, we're here to support you... and no doubt we'll have plenty of opportunities to expose you to different things as we travel and see the world together.

Technically I have one more event to attend tomorrow (a famous surgeon will be giving a lecture about failure!), so if you'd like to hang around for him, then let's do it.

Love,
Mama
